The Role
We are seeking a Senior Drupal Developer to support and enhance a federal Drupal-based content management system (CMS). This role is responsible for sustaining a mature Drupal platform while leading targeted modernization efforts, including re-theming, component development, and information architecture (IA) improvements, in alignment with U.S. Web Design System (USWDS) standards.
The ideal candidate is a hands-on senior developer who understands the rigor of federal environments and can balance stability, accessibility, and incremental improvement.
Key Responsibilities
Drupal CMS Sustainment
Maintain and support an enterprise Drupal CMS, including:
Custom templates and components
Theme maintenance and enhancements
Defect troubleshooting and resolution
Perform Drupal core, module, and security updates
Support minor enhancements and change requests while maintaining platform stability
Ensure CMS remains compliant with federal standards and best practices
CMS Modernization & Improvement
Lead or support re-theming initiatives to improve usability, accessibility, and visual consistency
Design and develop new Drupal templates and reusable components
Support information architecture (IA) improvements, including content structure and navigation updates
Collaborate with UX, content, and stakeholder teams to translate requirements into scalable CMS solutions
Ensure alignment with USWDS guidelines for federal digital services
Technical Collaboration & Quality
Work closely with designers, content strategists, and other developers
Contribute to code reviews and uphold development standards
Document technical solutions, components, and CMS configurations
Support testing, validation, and deployment activities
Required Qualifications
Technical Experience
5+ years of hands-on Drupal development experience
Strong experience with:
Custom theming and templating (Twig)
Component-based development
Drupal core and contributed modules
Experience performing Drupal upgrades and maintenance
Strong front-end development skills (HTML, CSS, JavaScript)
Experience working with USWDS or federal design systems
Professional Experience
Experience supporting CMS platforms in federal or government contracting environments
Strong understanding of accessibility (Section 508 / WCAG)
Ability to work in structured, compliance-driven environments
Strong communication and documentation skills
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with Drupal re-theming or redesign initiatives
Familiarity with information architecture and content modeling
Experience collaborating with UX and design teams
Experience with CI/CD pipelines for Drupal deployments
Active federal clearance or ability to obtain one (if required)
